Some of the finest fishing in Canada is right here in Lake of the Woods.  The many islands create infinite opportunities to fish on rocky reefs, sandy beaches, weedy bays or steep shorelines.  We'll be glad to show you the best spots for:

  • muskie
  • walleye
  • northern pike
  • smallmouth bass
  • crappie
  • lake trout

Muskie   (see our fishing gallery for more photos)

The uncontested king of all fresh water game fish.  Moody, fierce and unpredictable, they provide a real test for the expert as well as the amateur angler.   Sabaskong Bay of Lake of the Woods offers one of the finest "muskie hunting" areas on the continent.  It's darker water is perfect for allowing the fisherman to get the fish right up to the boat without spooking it.  Due to Lake of the Woods having one of the highest muskie minimum lengths anywhere, the fish are large.   Many of these fighters are entered in the record book each season.

Muskie season opens the third Saturday in June;  minimum length is 54 inches.   Best fished by casting.  Recommended tackle includes crankbaits, jerkbaits, bucktails, Suicks, reef haugs, Rapalas, haug wobblers, Mepps, red eye spoons, large spoons and cherry bombs.

Walleye   (see our fishing gallery for more photos)

Long a favorite with anglers and unsurpassed as table fare.  Caught in large numbers from mid-May through October.  They move from the shallow bays in spring to rocky shores and reefs with cooler water as the summer progresses.

Walleye season opens the third Saturday in May.  Best fished by jigging using 6 - 10 pound test line.  Recommended tackle includes 1/8 or 1/4 ounce leadhead jig in yellow, orange or chartreuse, Lindy rigs, pickerel rigs or Little Joe spinners.   Natural baits include minnows, leaches and nightcrawlers.

Northern Pike  (see our fishing gallery for more photos)

Long the favorite of the sport fisherman due to its large size and fierce disposition, as well as its excellent table qualities.  A real "tackle buster" attaining its great size in our clear, unpolluted waters.  Caught in shallow weedy bays in early season, these lunkers are to be found in deeper waters as the weather gets hotter.

Northern fishing is open all year round.  Fished by either casting or spincasting using 8 - 14 pound test line.  Recommended tackle includes five of diamonds, spinner baits, large Daredevle, bucktails, Suick, Mepps number 5 and red eye spoons.

Smallmouth Bass  (see our fishing gallery for more photos)

Pound for pound the gamest fighter to be found, they have thrived in our north woods lakes and are readily available to anglers.  A real thrill for the light tackle enthusiast and an excellent fish for catch-and-release fishing as they have no teeth to tackle with.

Bass season is open all year round;  however it is catch-and-release only until June 30th.   Best fished by casting or fly fishing using 4 - 6 pound test line.   Recommended tackle includes Mepps 1, 2 or 3 with bucktail, number 7 Rapala, small crankbait, jitterbug, Mister Twister, artificial nightcrawler, small Daredevles and rebel crawfish.
